Lightning is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy XIII, as well as the narrator and a temporary playable character in Final Fantasy XIII-2. She is to become the protagonist for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will conclude Lightning's story and follow her quest to save the world as it will end in thirteen days. The game takes place five hundred years after Final Fantasy XIII-2 (in the year 1000 AF) and Lightning will enter the final battle against a fate brought about by a new deity.
